THIS MONTH IN THE GARDEN
Wrap small trees with plastic tree coil
to protect them from gnawing rodents,
such as voles and rabbits, during the
winter. Cover the trunks one to two
feet above the expected snow line to
ensure protection.
Rake leaves off of the lawn—and onto
garden beds. Allowing fallen leaves to lie
unattended on the lawn over the winter
will smother and kill the grass, but the
leaves will break down and enrich the
soil in beds.
In Zones 8
i o ,
plant chrysanthemums,
pansies, snapdragons, dianthus, and
alyssum for cheery garden color all
winter long. A light frost will not stop
these plants from blooming, as long as
they have sun and water.
